Create student teams quickly, fairly, and thoughtfully

Random grouping saves time and reduces perceptions of favoritism, but pure randomness may not fit accessibility, safety, or role constraints. Treat the generated teams as a neutral starting point, then make only necessary adjustments for reasons you can explain consistently.

1. Prepare names with minimal personal data

Use only a name or code that the facilitator and participants understand. Do not put grades, health details, disabilities, phone numbers, or other sensitive information into the randomizer. Handle constraints separately and adjust teams without announcing personal reasons to the room.

Check that every participant appears once and that names are clear before generating teams. Magic Random keeps the list on the current device, which is useful for in-room grouping, but the official roster should remain in the institution's approved system.

2. Choose team count from the task and available time

Start with the group size the task needs: smaller groups when everyone must speak, or larger groups when several roles are required. Estimate the participant count divided by team count. The generator distributes members as evenly as possible, although one team may have one extra person when the numbers do not divide exactly.

When equipment is limited, let the number of available sets determine the number of teams. When time is short, smaller teams often give each person more participation, but confirm that the room and supervision can support the additional groups.

3. Make only necessary, consistent adjustments

After generation, check known constraints such as proximity to support, safety conflicts, or roles that every team needs. If a swap is necessary, apply the same rule across groups and explain only that the adjustment supports the activity; personal details do not need to be disclosed.

Do not regenerate repeatedly merely because the teams look uneven in ability. That undermines the claim that grouping was random. Decide beforehand whether the first result stands or whether published balancing criteria will be applied afterward.

4. Start a new round when the context changes

Keep teams stable through one activity to avoid repeated transitions. Generate a new round when the activity changes or when participants should work with different classmates. Local history can help recall recent results, but it should not replace official educational records.
